Back row (LtoR): Lisa, Naseem, Justin, Brian, Don; Middle row (LtoR): Nicole, Emily, Bibi, Tom, Jane, Siobhan, Shera; Front row (LtoR): Seema, Tareena
In addition to the Company, we had some wonderful guests: interns Emily and Naseem who gave a ‘green presentation’, grant writing volunteer Lisa, and Jane and Don, a couple living with aphasia who provided insight into their experiences with brian injury.
Tareena gave a costume design presentation on behalf of Costume Designer Jeannie Galioto.
Director Siobhan described the set model.
And we all dove into the world of Night Sky.
green people

This week Mo`olelo is fortunate to have a visiting intern from the Center for Sustainable Practice in the Arts, Naseem. She is a senior at Kalamazoo College, combining her passions in biology and theater. She and our summer intern Emily are spending the week meeting with other San Diego professionals who are working on sustainability issues in their work (thank you Lisa, Deirdre and Joey!) and they will make a short ‘green presentation’ to the Night Sky company on the first day of rehearsal.
Here’s a photo from Naseem’s first day with us, a meeting of green minds: Emily, Shera, Naseem, Ian and Justine.
stuffing party!
July 28, 2008
It’s become a tradition at Mo`olelo that with each production we gather some wonderful volunteers, grab some pizza and salad, and STUFF the promotional postcards into the trusty red Mo`olelo mailer. Such was the case for Night Sky. Today the staff, interns, volunteers and spouses (involuntary volunteers) stuffed 5,075 mailers (all pinted FSC Certified) which will be delivered to The Mailing Group early tomorrow morning where they will address, stamp, sort and bulk mail the pieces to our database, in the hopes that the recipients of the mailers will order their tickets to Night Sky. The amazing crew completed the work in 5.5 hours flat! Here are some snapshots from the day:

Well-oiled stuffing machine: Shera, Noah, Nick, Sue, Naseem, Areta, Emily, a little bit of Sharonfaith
MAHALO to all of the stuffers: Shera, Emily, Naseem, Carla, Phil, Sharonfaith, Joyce, Sue, Elaine, Troy, Noah, Areta, Dotty, Cheryl, Nick, Tareena… gosh did I miss anyone???

double double matching bubble
July 24, 2008
On June 14, Mo`olelo Board member Elaine Hiel announced a one-to-one fundraising matching challenge up to $5,000. We are pleased to report that, as of July 23, we have received funds and/or pledges totaling $4,609!! We’re almost there! Further, an anonymous donor has offered to double the challenge: if we can raise $10,000, he will contribute another $10,000! If you’re considering making a donation to Mo`olelo, now’s the best time to do it – it will be matched by both Elaine Hiel and the anonymous donor, turning your one dollar into three dollars!
Donations can be made over the phone at 619-342-7395, or you may donate by mail by sending a check made out to “Mo`olelo” to:
Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company
PO Box 710564
San Diego, CA 92171-0564.
We will mail you a donation receipt for your records and recognize your gift online and in our playbill.
Mo`olelo is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and your donation is tax deductable to the fullest extent of the law.
neighborhood bridges
July 13, 2008
Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company was selected to be a dissemination site for The Children’s Theatre Company’s nationally-recognized arts education program, Neighborhood Bridges. Teaching Artists Kiyoko and Emily traveled from Minneapolis to Monroe Clark Middle School in City Heights to train us on the program. Trainees included Mo`olelo staff, Young Audiences of San Diego staff, and teachers from the City Heights Educational Collaborative. Mo`olelo’s Artistic Director will attend the Neighborhood Bridges national conference in Minneapolis next week, and then we’ll strategize… Can we adapt and implement this program in San Diego? How do we raise the funds to support it?

meet the intern
July 10, 2008
About a month ago, we received a wonderful voicemail message at Mo`olelo. Emily, a Standford student, had read about Mo`olelo’s greening initiative in the San Diego Union Tribune (Mo`olelo Goes Green and Gets Funny) and she said she couldn’t stop thinking about it. A theater artist and environmentalist herself, Emily said she was interested in interning at Mo`olelo. So, we quickly put her to work. In addition to helping around the office, Emily is working on a ‘green theater project.’ She’s been interviewing Mo`olelo’s staff and designers to get a complete picture of what makes us and our upcoming production green, and she’s writing an article which will appear in the playbill for Night Sky. Further, she’s exploring how Mo`olelo can build upon our greening initiative. Emily will be interning at Mo`olelo through the summer. Stay tuned for great ideas coming from this young mind.

Toggle has aphasia
July 6, 2008
Mo`olelo’s Board President just brought this to our attention: the character Toggle, from Gary Trudeau’s comic strip, Doonesbury, appears to have aphasia, resulting from a trauma he received while serving in Iraq. It looks like Toggle had Broca’s aphasia, similar to the character Anna in Night Sky.
You can see more Doonesbury comic strips at http://www.doonesbury.com/strip/dailydose/index.html?uc_full_date=20080703
