CalArts Sustainable Theater Class

April 12, 2008

On Friday, April 11, I woke up at 5 a.m. to get on the road by 6 a.m. to meet Ian Garrett, Leslie Tamribuchi and the students of CalArts’ Sustainable Theater Class by 9 a.m. (in the interest of full transparency, public transportation wasn’t on our side, so I joined the millions of commuters on I-5 between San Diego and LA – ugh, I never want to make that drive again – for multiple reasons).

Ian and Leslie have pioneered a new field in theater studies with their Sustainable Theater Class. You can read their course syllabus at http://2wiki.theatercalarts.com/index.php?title=Sustainable_Theater; and check out Ian’s Green Theater Wiki at http://www.greentheater.toasterlab.com/index.php?title=Main_Page. The students are working on projects ranging from greening the cleaning systems at CalArts, to greeing the office operations, to exploring what a sustainable production looks like. Keep your eye on Ian, Leslie and these students as they, step-by-step, transform how we make theater.
