end of week one

September 13, 2010

We just completed the first week of YELLOW FACE rehearsals! Here are the cast, Stage Manager and Dramaturg at the end of the week:

They were saying “yellowface” as I snapped the photo.

It’s been a great process so far. We spent the week doing table work, slowly going through the script, raising questions, exploring intentions, and charting the journey of the characters. We discussed “face,” “race”, the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII, the casting of Jonathan Pryce in ‘Miss Saigon,’ Vincent Chin, the ‘Compton Cookout’ fiasco at UCSD last semester, and current debates over the  Ground Zero Islamic Center. It’s been a robust week of good work. Next week we get up on our feet and start blocking Act I.
