announcing residency at The 10th

January 3, 2011 – San Diego, CA – Critically-acclaimed Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company announces it has moved its office from Kearny Mesa to The 10th Avenue Theatre in Downtown San Diego. The previously “gypsy” theater is now the resident company at the East Village venue.

There was one sunny day during San Diego’s recent December rainstorms when the clouds parted and blue skies appeared. That was the day, December 23, Mo`olelo scheduled its move downtown.

Since January 2007, Mo`olelo had sublet office space from the worker’s compensation law firm Heggness, Sweet, Simington & Patrico, LLC, an opportunity that was cultivated by past President of the Mo`olelo Board of Trustees, Clifford D. Sweet III, a partner of the law firm. During that time, Mo`olelo performed at the Centro Cultural de la Raza, La Jolla Playhouse as the Inaugural Resident Theatre Company, and The 10th Avenue Theatre, transporting supplies back and forth from the Kearny Mesa office.

Starting in 2009, Mo`olelo began developing a deeper relationship with The 10th Avenue Theatre and the building’s managing owner, Jeff Cotta, hosting Mo`olelo’s “Tuesdays at The 10th“series, producing its mainstage shows, and attracting other artists to the venue. Through these efforts, the opportunity arose for Mo`olelo to take up residence in the mezzanine level rooms of the four story building.

“We are absolutely thrilled to call The 10th Avenue Theatre home,” said Mo`olelo Executive Artistic Director Seema Sueko. “We look forward to getting more involved with the East Village community and collaborating with Jeff Cotta and the other residents and theater renters to continue to make the venue an arts and culture hub.”

In addition to housing the 107-seat black box rental theater space, The 10th Avenue Theatre and Arts Centre also boasts an art gallery on the second floor; The Cabaret Room, a small performance space that seats up to 40 people and can be used for rehearsals, auditions or classes; the Top of the 10th Sky Deck, an open air rooftop with a capacity for 150 people great for special events, and (in development) The Speakeasy Wine Bar, an intimate basement space available for private parties. Further, The 10th is home to The Fitness Gallery “sculpts the body” with personal training by Adam Lake and Cory Russo; and three visual artists, Gerald Montoya, Adam Lewis Smith, and Theresa Wear rent studio space at the building as well.

“I have enjoyed the calibre of Mo`olelo’s productions and am happy they will be taking up residence at The 10th Avenue Theatre,” said Cotta. “I love the energy that comes from having all the arts activity at The 10th.  Mo`olelo is a major part of that vibrant energy.”

Coming up at The 10th Avenue Theatre, Mo`olelo will present a staged reading of Go, Tell Michelle: African American Women Speak to the First Lady on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at 6:00 pm; and from February 24 to March 20, 2011, Mo`olelo will produce Stick Fly by Lydia R. Diamond at the venue. For more information, please visit www.moolelo.net or call 619-342-7395.
